Review: Ruler of the Waves by Aiden Ainslie

Ruler of the Waves

Love at Lake Clyde: Book 3

by Aiden Ainsley

A Quail 5 Star read

 TRIGGER WARNING:
You cannot put it down once you start. Not even for a cuppa.

“You ought to come with a health warning, Dr. Matthews.”

 REVIEW

Hold on to your hats and prepare to set sail on a sea of emotion with Tyler and Rickie. Tyler just broke up with his boyfriend and Tyler needs a fake ex-boyfriend to accompany him to his med-student reunion. Rickie is the perfect candidate. These two have more ups and downs than a rollercoaster at an amusement park. Tyler wants to settle down and start a family, while Rickie wants to sail the seven seas.

Tyler may be a no-nonsense doctor, but even he can't resist the charm of Rickie, a construction trady. And who can blame him? Rickie is playful, creative, and not afraid to be a little silly. He's like a breath of fresh air in Tyler's otherwise soulless life. But let's not forget that Rickie is an ex-con on parole. That's right, we've got a bad boy in the mix.

The reunion with Tyler's old med-school friends is where things really start to heat up. Even when Tyler makes little mistakes, Rickie steps in and saves the day! Despite Tyler's snappiness, Rickie is always polite and Tyler's friends are none the wiser.

But just when things are starting to look up, the author throws a curveball that leaves Tyler and Rickie reeling. Suddenly, everything they thought they knew about themselves and each other is called into question. It's like a rollercoaster within a rollercoaster.

This story is so well-written, it's like the author has a PhD in human nature. Rickie is trying to leave his past behind, but it keeps coming back to haunt him. And Tyler, well, he's a doctor who needs some serious healing himself. Can these two find happiness together despite their vastly different goals in life?

So, buckle up, folks, because this story is a wild ride. And be prepared for some goosebump inducing writing that will leave you breathless. True love really does come when you least expect it.

My feelings morphed consistently while reading the book. From insane laughter to joy, to skepticism to sadness and tears.  This is a beautifully written story of two men yearning for true love and companionship, it’s a love story, a thriller and a comedy all rolled into one.  When I read, I’m not interested in characters who are just somebody's.  No one wants to read about characters who are just anybody. I want to read about interesting somebody’s, characters capable of evoking in me some measure of emotional response.  Aiden Ainsley does not falter in this. His characters are deeper than the Mariana Trench, they are troubled and flawed like all of us but they are also larger than life and let’s face it, think about your fave characters in literature, Scarlett O’Hara, Gatsby, Oliver Twist and Potter, they are painted on a huge canvass, and so it is with Tyler and Rickie.

The characters are rich, deep and totally believable. Rickie seeks redemption and justice and Tyler seeks companionship. Both are enduring and instantly likeable although Tyler can be a grump at times.

Here’s a quote from the book that shows the tension and passion of the characters:

You know, Rickie, when you play all those different roles, you are a superb actor. But, when you’re yourself, you are a pathetically bad liar. Why don’t you just say outright you don’t want to spend the night with me?”

By the time you have completely recovered from the read,

you’ll want more.
